A standalone notes window that can remain open completely independent of a specific branch

I think a standalone notes window that can remain open completely independent of a specific branch (for example, as a pure, globally usable note or comment function) would be useful. It would allow you to always keep an eye on existing information that you want to refer to when developing ideas. Currently, you have to open a second program (e.g., Word) alongside Mind Manager and position the windows side by side.

I support this idea.

In the short term one workaround is to do as you as you suggest and create a Word document (or another sort of file) to keep global notes about the map, but attach it to a topic in the map.

You would still have to open Word (or other app) in a separate window to edit this document, but if you just want to refer to it you could open the attachment in preview mode in MindManager's built-in browser. This way the file will open in a window within the map in the same way that topic notes do.

Unlike topic notes however, the attached file will stay in view even if you click on another topic or even view or open another map. It will remain in view unless you click on another attached document, linked file or web link on any topic using the internal browser.

As I indicated earlier, the file can't be edited when it's being viewed using the internal browser, and you also need to click on the refresh icon in this window to update if it has been edited in Word (it's also a good idea to do this the first time you open the file in the browser). However, apart from being more accessible, this approach has the advantage that the reference file is permanently attached to the map.

I agree, there is a lack of anywhere to host background information about a map.

For read-only resources, the built-in browser could be used. I think it can render Word and PDF documents as well as HTML. However because there is no "File" menu in the browser, it is awkward to navigate anywhere without starting from a web page. However I think this could be solved if people are interested. I once had a prototype of an App that could "pin" topic notes in the browser window so that they could be read alongside any other topic.

Hi Nick,

Yes, as I indicated in my response, the MindManager built-in browser can handle viewing (though not editing) Word documents. I agree that the lack of a file menu in the browser is a bit of a limitation, but you don’t have to start in the browser - if you need to refer to only one or two “reference” documents in this way then my suggested approach of attaching these files to map topics and simply opening them in the browser is a reasonable alternative.

However, your “pinned” topic notes App is a great idea, especially if you could actually edit the pinned notes. In an ideal world you would be able to have two notes windows, one showing the highlighted topic’s note and the other the pinned one, but I suspect that’s asking too much!

I will try to get this App packaged up for testing.

I love mind maps. ;-) They allow me to quickly see the subtopics under a main topic (for example: the note function). We have already discussed the note function many times in other suggestions and questions.

Here in the forum, they seem too separate to me.

They are often related.

In my opinion, the voting is also not meaningful enough. Can a beginner evaluate this suggestion? And would non-users use MindManager if the feature were available? Even if there are only 3 votes?

I have been using MindManager for over 20 years, mainly to structure long texts. I often use text passages to develop my outline. If these texts were in an extra window, it would be much easier for me to transfer individual thoughts from these texts to the mind map if I didn't have to keep going back to a particular branch.

Rene, what do you mean by

Hi Michael,

Hopefully René will correct me if I’m wrong, but I think he was referring not to your specific idea but rather the way ideas generally are handled in this forum. It’s quite common for the same idea to be suggested several times over the years - it might get several votes each time, but there is no way of knowing if these are the same people voting for it over again. In the absence of a system to aggregate similar ideas, it’s best to do a quick search through previous suggestions using keywords or tags before posting and possibly adding a vote or a comment to the idea if it has been posted before, though older topics are sometimes closed to further comments.

Unfortunately there is also very little feedback provided in response to these ideas, apart from a very small number which are marked as “under consideration” (and an even smaller number which are marked as “implemented”). It would be great if MindManager could provide some form of feedback on the likelihood of popular ideas being implemented, or perhaps they could explain why a suggestion can’t or won’t be implemented any time soon.

I have occasionally downloaded the entire list of ideas on the forum and mapped them to provide a basis for analysis, using tags to link related suggestions and then ranking them based on the aggregated votes, but for various reasons I have not got around to publishing the results. I might have a go at finally doing this later this year.

Of course it was my intention that this feature might be taken up and realized at some point. What would have been the right way to address this wish? Probably not this forum?

We currently have no other option.

I use the AI addin option to structure longtext

It is a free app that you use via MIndManager Apps (in MM vs 24)
You then install the AI apps.
