Custom marker icons can't be SmartRules triggers; icon handling is split across three places

I've been using MM for over 20 years and I find the icon handling to be incredibly confusing and poorly designed. When a user is in the Map Index pane and right clicks a group heading, it offers the option to "Use custom icon" but it takes the user to the "Images" folder (where there are .png files, not to the "icons" folder that has the standard .ico files) which means when one of the images is selected as an icon, that icon marker is never allowed as an option when setting up SmartRules. I find the entire icon storage locations to be counterintuitive and confusing.

The problem in detail:

  1. "New Custom Icon" and SmartRules don't use the same sources. In the Map Index, right-clicking a marker group and choosing "New Custom Icon" lets me pick any picture file, including the .png pictures in MindManager's own Images library, which is where the file window opens. The marker works fine in the map. But the SmartRules icon picker lists only .ico files in the icon libraries, never the markers in the map. So a marker I've just made and applied to topics can't be chosen as a SmartRules trigger.
  2. Different screens accept different files. "New Custom Icon" accepts a .png. "Add Icon..." in the Library panel accepts only .ico. The SmartRules picker shows only what is in the icon libraries. None of these tell you about the others' limits, so you find out by trial and error.
  3. Icons are kept in three places. These are the built-in library (stored on each PC), the user's own library (My Maps), and the icons saved inside each map with its markers. Each screen shows only some of them, so the same icon can be visible in one place and missing in another.
  4. "Marker" and "icon" are used loosely. I eventually worked out that a marker is a named icon saved in one map, but nothing in the interface says so.
  5. Changing computers makes it worse. Some custom icons appear on a new PC and others don't, depending on which of the three places they were saved in.

Suggested fixes:

  1. List the map's markers in the SmartRules picker. Let me choose from the map's own markers, by name, rather than hunting for a matching file on disk. This one change would solve most of the problem.
  2. Let "Add Icon..." accept the same files as "New Custom Icon". It should take .png and .jpg files and convert them to icons automatically, as "New Custom Icon" already does.
  3. Add "Also save to my icon library" to "New Custom Icon". Then any icon I make for a marker would also be available in SmartRules and in other maps. The file window should also open in my own icon library, not the Images folder.
  4. Use one icon picker everywhere. Markers, the Library panel and SmartRules should all browse the same set of icons: built-in, my library, and the current map's markers.
  5. Explain the terms in the interface. A short line in the marker and SmartRules windows saying what a marker is and where icons come from would prevent a lot of confusion.
  6. Make the personal library easy to carry to a new PC. When the library folder is in a synced location such as OneDrive, a new installation should find it, or prompt for it once.

Other users have run into the same confusion between built-in and custom icons, for example: https://community.mindmanager.com/topic/2679-how-com-only-certain-original-ico-icon-files-can-be-set-as-hotkeys

Thank you for considering this. Markers and SmartRules are powerful together, and fixing this would make them much easier to use.
