Searching .mmap content in SharePoint Online and Copilot - what's possible in 2026

This came up in an older thread, "Searching mmap content (in SharePoint Online)?" https://community.mindmanager.com/topic/1008-searching-mmap-content-in-sharepoint-online, which was answered as not possible: SharePoint Online doesn't index .mmap content, and Microsoft discontinued custom iFilters in the cloud. That answer is now out of date.

What's changed on the Microsoft side:

- You can now push custom content into the Microsoft 365 search index via Copilot connectors (formerly Graph connectors). The index quota is 50 million items per tenant at no extra cost.

- Miro already has an official connector that indexes board content into Microsoft Search and Copilot. Visio files are parsed natively by SharePoint. Mind maps stored in SharePoint remain invisible.

- Since .mmap is a zip of XML, the topic tree, notes, tags and hyperlinks are all cleanly extractable.

I run a Microsoft 365 consultancy and have a working parser that extracts the full topic structure from .mmap files. The missing piece is packaging it as a connector that watches SharePoint libraries and indexes every topic, so a keyword search surfaces the map and topic it lives in, and Copilot can answer questions from map content.

Before building the full connector, I want to gauge whether demand is real. If your organisation has a meaningful archive of maps in SharePoint Online and content search or Copilot over them would matter to you, reply here or send me a message. I'm looking for a small number of pilot organisations.
