I don't think there is. However, you could insert a single-cell table, apply a fill colour to it, and place all the text in that cell.
The cell will expand vertically as you add text. You have to set the width, but bear in mind that if you make the notes window narrower the cell width will decrease automatically as well, though it does not expand if you then widen the notes window.
Unfortunately this approach isn't an option if you want to set up an actual table in the note. as you can't have nested tables.

Thanks for your reply. This method looks like it will work for me just now - thanks. I suffer from migraine and the white page colour in Topic Notes was stopping me from using this function.
