What is an "adaptive map", and why is this the standard option? I want "right map" as a standard

What is an "adaptive map", and why is this the standard option? It seems to lead to all topics being located on the left side only. So what is the point?
Actually I want all topics to be on the right of the main topic. Is there a way to set this as a default?
