How can I get more flexibility with connectors, alignment, and layout

I've tried to make a genealogy chart but I find that I cannot control the layout. I can't align a floating topic and a regular topic. If I add a topic, MM merges it with the floating topic. I'm used to Visio connectors that have a great deal of flexibility and are not added by default.

You may want to try using a different template if you want more control over the layout. In some templates like right map, radial map, org chart, tree, and timeline, the layout is automatically created as you add topics and floating topics will get sucked into the main structure if you move them close to topics in the structure. Other templates like flowchart, free form, whiteboard, concept map, etc do not have layouts automatically created so you can create the connections and adjust their layout manually like in Visio.
