Please tell me why sometimes space is not recognized while spliting topics.

I usually enter space where I want to split, then ctrl+alt+insert, but I find that sometimes it doestn't work as I wish(the topic splits at somewhere I didn't enter space) , but shift +enter ,this combination is 100% effective.
It seems if you want to split long text, shift+enter is a better way, it works every time; space doesn't work well.
could you tell me why?
