NEED TO RECOVER A FILE

Please Help!!!
I received this message when I went to open a file -
(3:4709) Illegal xml character.
I looked at the file name and there was a . in the middle of the file name.
Is there a way to recover the file?
And, why did it not message me as I saved it that there was an illegal character?
This is the current name of the MindManager document file.
