I'd like to import the progress (in percent) from an Excel file...
The start and end dates are easy...
Thanks for your hints

I don't think you can do this directly.

You can import the progress percentage as a topic property, so one option is to create a set of SmartRules to insert the matching progress in the Task info based on the percentage imported to this property from Excel. This is a little cumbersome as you have to create a separate SmartRule for each percentage, but once done you can save the resulting set of SmartRules to the library for reuse in other maps. The same approach can be used to insert the priority of each task based on a priority property imported from Excel.

There is one major drawback with this approach. The resulting progress (or priority) shown in the Task Info is locked to the imported figure on every topic the SmartRule is applied to, and can't be changed directly without either switching off the SmartRule globally or for selected topics - and if you do this, the progress or priority disappears entirely either entirely from the map or from the selected topics. Alternatively you can indirectly update the progress or priority shown in the Topic Info by changing the entry in the related topic property.

Hi Alex, thanks for getting back to me. In the meantime, I’ve created "Smart Rules" to display progress via Excel properties. The fact that I can’t adjust the progress directly within the map doesn’t bother me this time, since the progress data is re-imported weekly from an Excel list.

However, I don’t understand why these Smart Rules aren’t included in MindManager by default—forcing everyone to build them from scratch isn't exactly what I’d call good customer service...

Hi Jörg, setting up default SmartRules to handle this could be a little tricky as “Progress” might be called something different in the Excel spreadsheet, and also doing it this way “locks” the resulting Task Info field from being edited directly. A better approach would be for MindManager to expand the options for handling this in the Excel data mapper import facility, so you could map the relevant column to the Progress field in Task Info regardless of its name in the spreadsheet, exactly as you can now do with Start Date, Due Date, etc. This approach would have the advantage that the Task Info field could be subsequently edited.

Actually I managed to get Claude to write a macro to run after importing the spreadsheet that does this with both Progress and Priority. First you import the spreadsheet with progress and priority mapped to topic properties of the same name, then run the macro which creates matching entries in the Priority and Progress Task Info fields. These are editable, but doing so doesn’t change the imported topic properties.

Hi Alex, Yes, there are many things that could be optimized, but my impression is that there isn't much motivation at MindManager to implement good ideas.

Hi Jörg, I agree that the rate of adoption of new features in MindManager is slower than it should be, but I suspect that adding features to a program as old and already feature-laden as MindManager is increasingly complex. And to be fair, the list of types that Excel data can be be mapped to on import has actually been increased since the feature was first introduced - hopefully these options will be expanded further to include features such as progress, priority and Kanban.

Hi Alex,
thanks for the idea - you have my vote.
