Improvements in Notes Suggestions

I used to follow the trend in terms of productivity and PKMS applications. I would like to suggest some features in Mindmanager.

Notes should allow code blocks for programmers, and latex for mathematical or scientific diagrams. Allow notes to mention or create a link to another topic. Add more layout options such as tree matrix, branch diagrams, allow a combination of layout. Make MM more focused to note-taking approach, for visual note-takers. Also allow the application to open multiple notes.

Hallo Neil,

It seems that you have these questions based on your own experience.

I assume PKMS stands for personal knowledge management system?

Could you provide some visual examples of your idea?

1. Notes should be more flexible like markdown WYSIWYG editors, which allows latex and code blocks.

Code Blocks

App used are Obsidian, it uses Markdown format, and it renders and lint the code automatically. By linting, I mean the code are formatted and colored, just like in programming editors. It starts and ends with “```” to tell the editor that it is a code block.

b. LaTeX code is written below:

A & = \frac{\pi r^2}{2} \\

& = \frac{1}{2} \pi r^2

Output of the LaTeX code:
c71d6a94b10269a56fc931f4e1751203

This feature is highly relevant to people who are studying math. Most mathematical equations are written in LaTeX. And most markdown editors have this feature included as well.

2. Allow notes to mention or create a link to another topic. Imagine this, Microsoft word can refer to another page and jump to that page. In this case, Mind Map notes feature should be able to mention a topic, and it’ll act as a hyperlink within the note.

3. Add more layout options such as tree matrix, branch diagrams, allow a combination of layout. Please look at Xmind’s diagrams, they can have a combination of layout. Like I can create a level 2 topics are in timeline, level 3 is in tree layout, and level 4 is in timeline layout and so on.

4. Make MM more focused to note-taking approach, for visual note-takers. I know for the fact that Sticky Note is another way of doing that, but it needs more optimization (the more the topics, the more laggy it feels) and customization. Like code blocks, headings, and so on.

Hi Neil,

While I would like the MindManager notes editor to be improved and I support many of your suggestions, your point 2, creating a link within a note to another topic in the same or another map, is already possible.

Hello Alex G.,

Since you mentioned that it’s possible, I checked it out and gave it a try. I find it challenging to link a topic—especially when there’s a large number of topics on the map, say, around a thousand. I think it would be more efficient if Notes could trigger a topic finder when "@" is typed, allowing users to search and select from the results.

While I’m sharing suggestions, I’d also like to propose that MindManager include a "focus on topic" feature. With this, only the selected topic and its descendants would remain visible and interactive, while all other topics would be hidden and inactive. This would help users concentrate on a specific section of the map without distraction.

I believe the canvas should be virtualized. As a programmer, I see this as a way to optimize performance by rendering and processing only the elements currently visible on the screen. This would help reduce lag, particularly when hovering over or resizing the map. Especially with complex and large number of topics shown.

Hi Neil,

Thanks for your extra input.
I assume you work with MindManager for Windows vs 24.

focus on topic can be found under VIEW => Detail.
maybe you would like extra options, but ...

Hi Neil,

You can also right click on the topic you want to link to, select Copy as Link from the context menu (or use the keyboard shortcut) and then paste the link into the notes of the relevant topic. I admit that it's annoying that you can't select multiple topics at once and do this, but this method is still relatively straightforward. I can see the attraction of your proposed approach, but it could be confusing in maps where multiple topics have the same name.

I would appreciate it if it were possible to create several note fields per branch.

My use case:

There is a work package description for a work package -> note field 1

I document all changes during the project in note field 2.

When I create a report, I can select that I only want to export the changes (note field 2).

I think that would be great to turn into a suggestion for people to vote on.

Two other additions:

  • Make it easier to set up templates in notes
  • Add the option of multiple notes per topic. This way you could delineate the notes so that you could filter and select the ones you want to highlight and/or export.
