Is it possible to display the number of direct sub-branches on the parent branch? This would save the manual counting.

As far as I can tell this isn't possible. However, you could add a topic property to each of the child topics with a value of 1 and then use a formula to count these at the parent level.

not possible, but you could activate the numbering in the menu Insert. That would give you a least the total summ of the subtopics
