Is there a difference between a linked file and the "rolled up" file?

I have tried both together that they seem to be functionally equivalent, can't see any obvious difference.

I have done a bit more reading... there seems for be a flow of object and task data with the "rolled up" connection that would not be accommodated with the more simple linked file. Am I on the right path?

Yes, a map rollup is a link with additional data. In addition to linking to the remote map, it also replicates data from the central topic of the remote map in the local map. If the central topic of the remote map contains information such as task status, resources, icons and so on, these are also shown in the local map for convenience. This lets you create a "map of maps" dashboard where you can see essential information across a set of sub-maps in one place.

There are other options too but the above is the basic concept.

when i modify map2, will it also update in map1?

Yes, the information from map 2 will be updated in map 1 when you refresh the map rollup. You can also set it to automatically refresh when you open map 1.
